Funny Sells

Design in advertising is more than just arranging pictures, words and graphic elements on a page. It’s a means of introducing a person, product, or concept to a target audience. It must begin with an understanding of that audience's point of view and then motivate them to see another point of view. There are many ways to motivate people to change their viewpoint. The most obvious one is to promise them something better than what they already have. In this case design works to build trust in the audience by conforming to accepted standards of presentation thereby inspiring confidence in the product through confidence in the presentation. The design must also be executed with skill and precision to reflect equal quality on the product being presented.

Another method of motivating an audience to take a leap of faith and try something new is to pique their curiosity with a teaser. This method requires implying something extraordinary while holding back essential information which can only be done if the format permits it and risks losing the  audiences interest if the answer is not revealed soon enough.

Yet another motivator in advertising is humor. Humor has three key elements that make it an effective means of advertising:

1. It puts a smile on peoples faces which primes them for making a purchase.

2. It inspires the viewer to repeat what they've heard or seen to others, thereby expanding the  advertisers reach.

3. It is its own self contained reward having a similar  psychological effect on the consumer as a free  sample.
